IP Lookup -- How does it work?

IP Lookup is simply a query request against the WHOIS database servers to retrieve the IP address registration information.

Who is running WHOIS database server?
The Regional Internet Registry (RIR) who allocates IP addresses in a certian region provides WHOIS services for finding contact and registration information for resources registered. Overseen by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), there are five RIRs:

1. American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) --- North America
2. RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE) --- Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia
3. Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) --- Asia and the Pacific region
4. Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC) -- Latin America and the Caribbean region
5. African Network Information Centre (AfriNIC) --- Africa
