It's has nothing to do with email address. Email address tells only the email server's location and userID. If the hacker is able to crack down the email security system, all the hacker get is the information on the email server, not from your computer.
Whenever you connect your computer to the internet, e.g. browsing message board, your computer's ipaddress is public to the machine you are connecting to and all the middle gateway or routing machines. With your computer's ipaddress, the hacker can easily locate your computer and scan any possible security vulnerability of you computer. Usually, you have no control of the security vulnerabilities since most of them come with your operating system. The best way to get rid of being hacked is to hide you REAL ipaddress -- that's where firewall or router to fit.

I go on an investment message board. We have login names. Somebody made a ficticious name and used my wife's email address. Can someone hack in our computer and use our ip address?
THanks
